Measurable Benefits

M E A S U R A B L E    B E N E F I T S :

imagine you see a pictograph that looks goodYouth who participate in Adams Lake 'Youth Program' are given an opportunity to experience a wide range of activities that seek to educate and provide peer support through interaction with other community members. The youth program is designed to encourage youth to seek an active life-style into their adult years by presenting opportunities to engage in various forms of activities.

Some real measurable benefits are the 'zero' tolerance towards drug & alcohol for youth attending an activity. However, like most normal social bell curved communities there is a small percentage of youth whom fall outside and commit the majority of vandalized acts. For this small population we offer continual support and inclusion to programs, providing they meet our base rules in attending. Opportunities to experiment with drugs & alcohol will exist for our young people at any time; our challenge is to provide an avenue that provides for a positive choice to counter a negative situation our youth are faced with.

Vandalism to buidings in our community is less frequent due to proactive involvement with out community's youth population. Construction site vandalism is down considerably and we've received many comments by contractors mentioning this fact.

Graffiti is another measurable social factor when determining the impact our program has upon our community's youth. Graffiti in the community is less visible here then in most other of our outlying communities. Although, graffiti exists we experience far less frequency in dealing with matters of this nature.

Participation is the most noticeable impact in our program for youth. Through the operation and functioning of our program youth have continued to participate regularly. Participation is how we quantify our programs existence like most other social programs that utilize community service. WE conduct community fundraisers like spaghetti meals, bottle-drives, and raffles to lessen the financial burden upon parents/guardians of our youth. Further, encouraging the participation of both parent & youth in achieving a goal is a positive indicator in developing a stronger community.

The Adams Lake Band has committed over the past years to youth in community that youth are essential to our people's future. Like most Aboriginal communities the Adams Lake Band reserve population of youth 25 years & under make up the majority of its population. Youth are an important part of the Adams Lake Band, I believe the programs existence is a fact to that goal
